Symptoms
When FineReader product is started the following error message appears:
ABBYY FineReader Licensing Service is unavailable: The RPC server is unavailable.
Cause
ABBYY Licensing service has been stopped. This can be caused by other software e.g. antivirus. Also sometimes the system starts its services that have more priority and the FineReader licensing service was not started due to timeout.
Resolution
To fix this issue follow the steps below:
- Type in the Windows search Services and open it.
- Find the ABBYY FineReader <version> Licensing Service in the list of services and right-click it.
- Select Properties from the shortcut menu.
- Select the General tab.
- Check if the Automatic item is selected in the Startup type drop-down list. If a different item is selected, select Automatic.
Or select Automatic (Delayed start) if the error message occurs every time after a reboot. - Click the OK button.
- In the Services dialog, right-click the ABBYY FineReader <version> Licensing Service and select either Start or Restart from the shortcut menu.
- Launch ABBYY FineReader to make sure it is working correctly.
This instruction corresponds to a locally installed FineReader software. If you deploy installation in LAN, follow the instruction from the article.
Additional information
If there is no ABBYY FineReader Licensing Service in the list of services, please repair the program as described in the article: Repairing FineReader.
If the service was not restored after the repair, uninstall the program as described in the article: How to completely remove FineReader PDF 16 for Windows. And reinstall it using the distribution kit of the latest version of the program: FineReader download links.

The solution works for a period of time then reverts to the error message. The solution is a temporary fix only.

This doesn't work on Window 7. "Services" only yields documents with that word in the title. Tried another method going through the Control Panle. That didn't work either.

Hello Jon Kittilsen,
Try to press Windows+R hotkeys, type services.msc and press enter. Services windows should be opened.

So the file ending was missing. Thank you.

In my machine the start button in disable status, can someone help us how it can be enabled?
Victoria Dvornikova
Hi Posanipally, Raju,
If all buttons for the Service are disabled, then it may be connected with the lack of permissions for the user under which you are logged in the System. Try to log in under Administrator or grant additional permissions to the user.
We also received a support ticket from you, please provide all further details in the ticket.

Since installing Windows 11, I have the same message as in the screeie above. In addition, there is no "Abby FineReader 15 Licensing Serrvice" in "services". Repeated installations of the program, including cleaning the registry, do not change. Still the same chimney. What to do?
Victoria Dvornikova
Hello Bolotele,
My colleague from Customer Support has provided you a reply in the ticket #482454.

So what this amounts to is that Abbyy Finereader is useless without an Internet connection or behind a serious firewall.

Hello Victoria,
I have no problem starting ABBY 15 but when I start scanning, the following message pops up:
"RPC server unavailable. Diagnostic message 950(0x000006BA) 1050(0x000006BA)"
I didn't use ABBY 15 for a while but this is the first time this problem occurs. My operating system is Windows 10.
Can you help, please,
