Updated OCR languages, export formats, and disabled BookScan feature

Dear Customer,

We've made some changes to our functionality, including updates to our list of export formats and OCR languages, along with discontinuing the BookScan feature.

You now have the option to recognize your documents in 183 languages and export them in 4 different file formats:

  • Microsoft Word (*.docx)
  • Microsoft Excel (*.xlsx)
  • Plain Text (*.txt)
  • Searchable PDF (*.pdf)

Additionally, we have simplified the usability of the app by providing book scanning capabilities as part of the main scanning tool of the application as opposed to having the separate Book Scanning function.

“Additionally, we have simplified the usability of the app by providing book scanning capabilities as part of the main scanning tool of the application as opposed to having the separate Book Scanning function.”

I’m sorry, but this sentence is confusing and - to me anyway - impossible to understand. There used to be a “book scanning capability” right inside “the main scanning tool of the application,” where there was an option for scanning a “Book” instead of a “Doc.” Now that capability has simply been removed. It is not provided anywhere else in the app, and there is no help anywhere for someone who’s confused that it’s disappeared.

Why did you simply take this option away? If it’s hidden somewhere deep within the app - and I’ve looked hard for a long time now, I’m confident it’s not there - why not notify users who are used to the button to help them?

Is there any way to scan books in the app currently?

(To make it clear, I am on the iOS app FineReader PDF, for which I paid a lot for the Premium Unlimited version back in 2021. I know FineReader is available on many platforms; I assumed that the heading “FineReader PDF for Mobile” meant this announcement referred to me, and its timing coincides with the removal of this feature from the FineReader PDF on iOS, but I apologize if I was in error.)

    Hello Jeff,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are right, Book scan feature is not available in the current version of the mobile application. I have forwarded your comment to our R&D team.

Victoria: It looks like this core feature hasn’t been added back to the mobile app; is it ever going to return?

Maybe I’ve misunderstood the above, though. You mentioned “the main scanning tool of the application” - is this a reference to FineReader 16 Desktop? Is the intention to ask people to use FineReader 16 Desktop instead of Mobile? If so, how can I do this?

If not - and if this feature has simply been permanently removed from FineReader Mobile - can you please let me know how I can request a full refund of my 2021 purchase of FineReader Premium for Mobile, since FineReader 16 Mobile now lacks the key feature I bought FineReader for?

I noticed today that the book scan feature was removed. In my opinion, the book scan feature is the most valuable aspect of your product, and it's the reason why I subscribed. Could you please consider adding the feature back in the next update?

This is unacceptable, there is no logic in pulling out this feature.

At least add a split page option.
