How to set a password for a PDF document to protect it from unauthorized access, editing, and printing?

Answer

To protect a PDF document with a password, please follow the next steps:

  1. Open the document in PDF Editor.
  2. In FineReader PDF 16: go to the Security tab and click on the Password Security button.
    In FineReader PDF 15: open PDF Tools bar and click on the Password Security button.
  3. The Security Settings dialogue box will open.

  4. To protect a document from unauthorized opening, select the Restrict access with a Document Open password option.
  5. Type a Document Open password and confirm it.
  6. To prevent unauthorized printing, editing, or copying of the document, select the Restrict printing and editing with a Permissions password option.
  7. Type a Permissions password and confirm it.

    Note: The Document Open password and the Permissions password must be different.

  8. From the Printing drop-down list, select a printing resolution for the document.
  9. From the Editing drop-down list, select allowed editing operations.
  10. To allow other users to copy and edit the content of the document, select the corresponding options.
  11. Select an encryption level and components to encrypt.
  12. Click OK.

Note: When sending the protected documents to other users, please be aware that some products may not fully support the selected restrictions and may allow their users to bypass them.
