Recommended scanning parameters for FineReader Engine

Use the recommended resolution, color mode, and brightness settings when scanning documents for processing with FineReader Engine 12. These settings help optimize image quality, recognition accuracy, and processing speed.

Resolution scanning settings

Choose the scanning resolution based on the size of the text:

  • 300 dpi recommended for regular text printed in fonts of 10 pt or larger
  • 400–600 dpi recommended for smaller text printed in fonts of 9 pt or smaller

Color mode scanning settings

Choose the color mode based on the quality and content of the document.

  • Black and white: Use this mode for high-quality documents containing plain text. It provides the fastest processing speed.
    • Use threshold binarization. Do not use dithering methods such as diffusion dithering or pattern dithering, as they are not suitable for OCR.
  • Grayscale: Use this mode when the document contains unwanted visual elements, such as noise, shadows, or background textures, that need to be removed.
  • Color: Use this mode when you need to remove specific color elements, such as stamps. You can then use color filtering to remove the unwanted elements.

Black-and-white scanning can improve processing speed but may also remove character details needed for accurate recognition. This can reduce recognition quality, especially for documents with medium or low print quality.

Brightness scanning settings

A brightness setting of approximately 50% is suitable for most documents. When scanning in grayscale mode, the scanner adjusts brightness automatically.
