Question
How to change or limit the number of CPU cores involved in processing (OCR) in FineReader PDF?
Answer
FineReader PDF 16 version
By design, FineReader PDF can use N-1 cores from N cores available for the processor. This leads to N-1 Background executor processes ABBYY Background Host being started after FineReader PDF is launched. For example, if a computer has N=8 CPUs, then N-1=7 Background Host processes will be launched.
The selected number of cores is applied to any recognition in OCR Editor and PDF Editor of FineReader PDF including the background recognition.
To change the default settings for the number of processor cores used for OCR, please follow the steps:
- Start FineReader PDF > go to the File menu > Options... > Other.
-
Change the settings in Number of processor cores to use for OCR section.
FineReader PDF 15 version
FineReader PDF 15 can use N-1 cores from N cores available for the processor. This leads to N-1 Background executor processes ABBYY background executor being started after FineReader PDF is launched. For example, if a computer has N=8 CPUs, then N-1=7 Background executor processes will be launched.
The selected number of cores is applied to any recognition in FineReader PDF 15 except for the background recognition and processing with the Recognize button in PDF Editor. For these tasks, FineReader PDF 15 uses 1 core only.
To change the default settings for the number of processor cores used for OCR, please follow the steps below:
- Start FineReader PDF 15 > go to the Tools menu > Options... > Other.
- Change the settings in Number of processor cores to use for OCR section.
Processing using Hot Folder
Another limit for cores used for OCR is applied for processing documents via Hot Folder both in FineReader PDF 16 and FineReader PDF 15 versions.
2 cores can be used for Hot Folder in the FineReader Corporate version. The number of cores used by Hot Folder is restricted by the license parameter Hot Folder Core Count and can be checked in the license parameters in FineReader: Help menu > About > License Info > Show license parameters.
Hot Folder is not available in the FineReader Standard version.
