Known issue: working with areas (it is not possible to edit areas detected automatically and to draw an area manually).

It would've helped if the ABBYY team actively spread this information to its customers (idk, email or something? not expect them to monitor the specifications log, after having purchased a product?) immediately at the moment this bug was identified to warn them: you guys, you might wanna wait with the update if you need FineReader. Because now I'm stuck with BigSur and non-operational FineReader that I normally need on a daily basis. I honestly could have waited for the update...

Your support for Mac OS has been just execrable! FRP has not been updated in a significant way in many years.

Guys, this is really poor. Not only has Big Sur been generally available for 5 days now, it has been in beta for many, many months. One of the primary reasons for the betas is to allow developers like yourselves to ensure your software is fully working and compatible, ready for the GA launch of the new OS.

I really need a version of FineReader that is compatible with Big Sur. Right now, I am waiting to upgrade my operating system based on this one app!

Same problem here. It's also frustrating that you are offering a 50% discount right now on upgrades to FR Pro, but it is not compatible with Big Sur. You should offer the same discount when you finally resolve Big Sur compatibility.

100% agree with Blair Kirkland's comment.

Where is the FOLLOW button? I don't see that option anywhere on this thread page.

Ah, I had to try a different browser to see it. In Big Sur and on Firefox, the FOLLOW button does not show. It does show in Chrome and Safari.

    Hi Jennifer,

We cannot reproduce this issue with Follow button in Firefox browser. I will ask you additional question via the ticket created.

A good macOS 11 (Big Sur) version can't come soon enough.

Please increase your support for Mac users - there are a lot of us out here :-)

    Thanks!

Do i have to look around for other software? i hope not, until to day, before the update (Big Sur) finereader was the best sofware i used for scanning and converting files. i hope you wil come soon with an update, at the moment is finereader almost useless.

This is the only program stopping me from upgrading OS. Are there specific features that don't work or is it the entire program ?

Hi Peter, the program works in Big Sur, only specific features apparently are a problem, but I haven't encountered them yet for what I used it for (basic OCR and PDF to .docx conversion).

Hi Matthew, thanks for the response. I use primarily for converting text on images and PDF to .docx.

Victoria's post mentions - "Known issue: working with areas (it is not possible to edit areas detected automatically and to draw an area manually)."

I was wondering if she meant when you clear the automatically selected areas you can not change area type say from table to text ?

    Thanks

    Hi Peter,

You can change the area type, but cannot edit the area detected automatically (except Table) or draw a new one. As a workaround you can try to change the area you need to edit to Table (right-click > Change area type > Table Area), edit area borders and then change the area back to the type you need.

    Hi,

So, to check I understand this correctly, Finereader will work with Big Sur as long as you don’t need to change areas, and otherwise it will convert to text in the usual way?

    Is that right??

    Hi Tor Pettit,

Yes, you are right, for main conversion tasks (Convert to PDF, Convert to Word) no issue were found in FineReader Pro on Big Sur.

I'm not sure I fully agree with this. Although it does work in general for conversion and scanning/OCR, I am find it regularly crashes, generates an error report, and the program has to be restarted. I can do what I need to do with it however patience is required and the regular crashes are frustrating.

That is concerning about crashes.  I heavily use Finereader for self employed work, and need it to be reliable.

Any more news on when it might be fixed to work with Big Sur??

In case the following additional information is somehow not already known, then I would like to say -- I cannot speak for others, but for myself, I find I cannot use the eraser in the image manipulation pane, nor can I use the "Correct Perspective" option -- as it is now impossible to click and drag. The points from which the user is supposed to click and drag do not work anymore, it is no longer possible to move them when I try to do so.

Therefore, I have decided not to use FineReader for anything until the expected update has been prepared. However, I actually do believe in your company, and I believe that eventually all the problems will be fixed. I ask people for patience even though it can be frustrating and difficult. It is still better to have empathy and to forgive.

I have the same issues as Julian above.

I agree with other comments that this should have been fixed before Big Sur was released to the public. I, like others, am dependent upon this software for my work. I simply cannot make other arrangements- except for buying alternative software - whilst Abbyy takes it time. This is about a company's commitment to its customers. I think it speaks volumes. If this issue is not fixed within a week, I will be forced to change software. I imagine others are in a similar position. Why would a company want to lose its customers? I suppose it is because we have already paid! This is not OK.

I agree with Jason, I give Abby time til the end of December to fix this, and come with an upgrade.

otherwise I uninstall “finereader” and go looking for similar software, I think it’s going to be prizmo.

    Hello Julian Garberson,

Yes, you are right, product settings that are connected with manual selection with the cursor in Image Editor are not working in FineReader Pro on macOS 11.0.1.

    Hello Tim Nevin,

If you mean the issue with crashes, then please consult with the following KB article https://support.abbyy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016041020. This will be fixed in the next release.

    Um wow.

So I'm a developer and I have worked with MacOS extensively. It's not that hard to get ahead of this and fix bugs for a new OS ahead of the OS release. Apple gives us four months to work out kinks.

Having worked on the inside of development teams, I can tell you that for the vast majority of software (including business and professional software) that "waiting for the gold master to avoid beta bugs" and "we're a small team" are just excuses for "our leadership doesn't care enough to get ahead of this and would rather saddle our support team with the burden of responding to angry customers."

Frankly, it's pretty sad when companies don't respect their customers and their support staff like this.
