The filename or extension is too long

Symptoms

When trying to convert a batch of files from the folder (via the Explorer context menu), the following error message appears:

The filename or extension is too long.

Cause

The error may be caused by the specific symbols in the filename or the filename length (with the path) of the processed files. The restriction is connected to the Windows OS.

Resolution

To solve the issue, check the filenames and try to upload to FineReader images by parts (100 at once). Also, try to use the OCR Editor for file processing.

If processing files by parts is unacceptable, please do the following:

  1. Create a folder with a short name in the root folder of your local drive (for example, D:\scan);
  2. Rename your input documents to short filenames (for example, 001.jpg, 002.jpg... 800.jpg);
  3. Process all the files with FineReader.

As an alternative solution, the Hot Folder application can be used for processing files.

Note: To use the Hot Folder application, please consider a purchase of the corresponding FineReader PDF license.
