To make sure that the subscription has been successfully cancelled please do the following: open the Settings app on your iPhone> Tap your name> Tap Subscriptions> Click desired app> View subscription status. 

If there is a Cancel Subscription button, that means the subscription is active. Otherwise, that means the subscription auto renewal has already been canceled. The renewal date or expiration date will be shown.
