Unable to edit and create areas in FineReader Pro for Mac

Symptoms

When working with recognition areas in FineReader Pro for Mac on the latest macOS (macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, and Sonoma), it is not possible to change the borders of the area or create a new one. 

Cause

Please note that FineReader Pro for Mac version is no longer supported. More information can be found in the following article: ABBYY FineReader Pro for Mac End of Life. The macOS Big Sur or later has not been announced as supported for the program: FineReader Pro for Mac Specifications. We cannot guarantee the correct functioning of the program in all the scenarios.

Resolution

There is a possible workaround to edit areas in FineReader Pro for Mac. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Select a text area to be changed.
  2. Right-click it > select Change Area Type > Table Area.
  3. Make the necessary changes.
  4. Change back the area type to the Text/Picture.
  5. Recognize a document.
