Is there a way to scale the pages to be of identical size after using the crop tool? If I import the different single-page PDF files, which are identical in dimensions, but then use the crop tool on some of them, the result is that the cropped pages will be smaller than the standard set in settings under "Use one paper size for all page images". Is there any way to fix that other than cropping the images in a different app before importing?
Page size after cropping

Hello Yoan!
There is no image resize tool in FineReader PDF. However, if you're converting multiple PDFs into one output PDF (if I understood your task correctly), and crop images of some pages in the process, these cropped pages should become of the same format (size) as the others again when the option "Use one paper size for all page images" is turned on.
If you get a different result, please open a support ticket here in the Help Center by clicking "Submit a request", and provide detailed information of what version of FineReader you use, how exactly you process the documents, and give sample of the document(s) - we will check.
To crop all imported pages to the same size you can use Crop tool in FineReader PDF, either in OCR Editor -> Edit image, or in PDF Editor -> Organize pages. The Crop tool has the option to apply the same cropping frame to all pages thus resulting in the page images being of the same size.
Hope it helps.
Yuriy
Hi Yuriy,
Thank you for the reply.
Perhaps I am misunderstanding something. For example, if I import, 10 identical in size and settings pages but need to crop half of them from two sides (top & left) due to how they were scanned, those 5 that are cropped are going to be smaller in side compared to the other 5. When viewed in Abbyy they appear smaller, if the page is set to fill the window, then the zoom level is higher, and if the PDF is exported and opened in another program, those pages still appear smaller, despite the PDF settings being "A4 for all pages". Is this intended or not?
The thing is I have 950 pages of an old scanned book which I need to process and while Abbyy does a great job of splitting doubles, straightening lines, etc. I still need to do the cropping manually. And unfortunately there is no way to crop all pages in the same manner, or even odd/even pages for that matter, since it's all a bit random. I was hoping I could do that in Abby while maintaining page size.
Hi Yoan,
You're welcome!
"those pages still appear smaller, despite the PDF settings being "A4 for all pages" - I've tried in the most recent release of the current FineReader PDF 16 on Windows. I did the conversion with cropping in the OCR Editor. The cropped pages become of the same size as the others (provided the setting mentioned above is on). If a page is cropped in the PDF Editor though, then the cropped page remains smaller than the others as you described, even if you save the PDF again via the Save dialogue with the setting on.
"there is no way to crop all pages in the same manner, or even odd/even pages" - there is such possibility in FineReader PDF, though it may depend on how you define "the same manner". Crop tools, both in PDF Editor and in OCR Editor of FineReader, allow selecting all, odd, or even pages, and then applying the same crop frame (same size, same position) to all selected pages (in OCR Editor, in PDF Editor). However, of course, the position of the text on scanned pages is not always the same, especially in case of scanned images, and in such cases individual adjustment of the cropping frame for certain pages may be required.
Please do not hesitate to open a support ticket in case you need further assistance.
BTW, when converting the images taken by a digital camera, FineReader can detect page edges automatically to separate the image of the page from the surface of the table on which the page was photographed. It's not exactly what is applicable to the case we're discussing, but maybe you'll find it useful for some other cases.
Hi Yuriy,
Thanks once again.
You are correct, the pages do become the same size when cropped with the OCR editor, BUT instead of stretching the image to fit the page, the editor fills in around it with white, making the cropped page have the same page size, but the content is still smaller. Now this would make perfect sense in most situations where you do not want to lose quality, but my scans are at 1200DPI and Abbyy currently exports at 300DPI so there is more than enough quality to stretch the image a bit. Any tips how to work around that?
As for "detect edges", I do have it turned on, but it does not seem to work all that well. Sometimes it does crop well, but more often than not it "detects" the edge of the scan itself as the edge of the page.
I'm on Windows, by the way, using FineReader 15 I purchased a couple of years ago, build 15.0.117.11843
Hi Yoan,
"to stretch the [page] image a bit" - unfortunately, this is not possible in FineReader PDF.
Detecting edges is actually intended for photographed images, not for scans, and it works the best when there is contrast between the document and the background surface.
Hi Yuriy,
Sorry for the late reply.
So my only option is to crop all the pages to an exact size using a third party program before importing into FineReader? That seems rather strange for a paid PDF utility software.
Hi Yoan,
Same problem... It's a bug maybe.
Program version 16 did the same thing for me as it did for you. I installed version 15 (15.0.114.4683) and it works perfectly. All pages will be the same size even after cropping.
I just have one question: Where are the testers?!
Hello Zsolt,
I suppose you may have a different issue, which we would like to analyze additionally. That is why I have created a support ticket based on your comment and our Customer Support agent will contact you soon.
If at all possible please post any updates or solutions for this topic. Right now I combine all my scanned pages/images into a single document with a third party pdf editor. I can then use print to file and in the print dialog settings, force all the scanned pages/images to fit the desired page size. The output is a pdf document with all my scanned pages/images at the desired size. If you try this make sure you don't allow the third party pdf editor to use any of its text recognition or image processing wizardry. Then I drag/drop the file in ABBYY and I get back to the fun part of turning squiggly lines into readable/searchable text.
Hello Greg! You can do the same - combine scans/images to a single pdf document and then use print to file and in the print dialog settings, force all the scanned pages/images to fit the desired page size - with FineReader PDF too. This will make images fit to the desired page size. When combining images to a pdf, make sure the option "Use one paper size for all page images" is off.
It is not the best possible implementation of "fit to page size" function, of course, but at least you won't need another application for that.
