There is a strange problem I am encountering with image quality when making PDFs with ABBYY FineReader 16.
There is a very strong smoothing or quality reduction of the images, nomatter what settings I choose for the image quality. This problem occurs both in FineReaderOCR Editor and in Hot Folder.
The processed images look like this:
There is very strong smoothing / quality reduction and all the details of the page texture are obliterated. I would like to be able to see the paper texture and even in the highest quality setting the texture is gone. The original scanned image looks like this:
In batch processing in Hot Folder, the problem is the same, but sometimes, on some pages, this smoothing does not occur. In the same PDF file, some pages are lacking detail, while others are alright, like in this example:
The upper page is very smooth and all detail is gone, while the lower page has retained the paper texture.
In the example above, I have switched off Preprocessing, MRC compression is switched off, and PDF image quality is set to 150 dpi, 60%, and no changing of image color:
I cannot understand why this is happening. In FineReader 15 this problem was not present.
Any suggestions?

In your last screenshot, you have Quality: "Quality loss allowed" - have you tried changing it to "Quality loss not allowed"?
I don't think that will solve all of the issues but it might be a start.
Gave it a try but the issue persits. In Hot Folder and in FineReaderOCR with the "Quality loss not allowed" setting in the PDF Options I still get smoothing / quality reduction, and again in the final recognized PDFs not all pages are the same. Some are heavily processd, while others are fine:
The upper page has retained detail, while the lower is heavily compressed, with heavy smoothing.
The quality setting is:
It seems to me that this compression / smoothing occurs in the stage before saving, because the settings in the PDF Options seem to have no effect whatsoever. Moreover, if I carry out OCR in the main app (FineReaderOCR), the images look smooth and compressed in the app itself, even before saving the PDF:
Also, it seems to me this has something to do with the physical size of the scanned pages. With smaller pages (like books) there is no problem - there is texture. The issue occurs most often with larger pages, like those in newspapers.
Any other suggestions?
Has anyone else encountered this problem and were you able to solve it? I can send a few of the pages I am working with for testing purposes.
