There seems to be no way of reporting on progress for this product. (I've allocated it to the nearest equivalent that I could find.) Every time I buiuld a new computer or rebuild an existing one I have to jump through ever more difficult hoops to get it activated. Isn't there a more effective way of doing this?

PDF Transformer+ is an old product which is not supported anymore. You can check the status of support of a product/version on the page https://support.abbyy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018776140. However, if you need to reinstall it on a new computer and automatic activation is not possible, please submit a request to our Support Team which will help you.
We recommend considering FineReader PDF as a current, supported application to replace PDF Transformer+.
