If you are upgrading FC old version while it is installed on SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014. The old version may have been installed on SQL server standard edition successfully. However, the new FC version will fail to upgrade. Before you upgrade to latest FC versions you have to use SQL Server 2012 or 2014 Enterprise edition FC will stop in the middle of the upgrade and will report an error “Partition function can only be created in Enterprise edition of SQL Server. Only Enterprise edition of SQL Server supports partitioning.”. This a dilemma because you will have to upgrade the Database first and then upgrade the FC version.
