How do I add Buttons and Controls to the Document Definition Editor?

This is the only user interface that isn't discussed in the administrator's guide

Specifically, I'd like to script a user command in the document editor that automatically changes the export settings to a preferred configuration.

I've consulted the appendix, but I'm not sure what objects to use to set the export settings

There are a few other user commands I'd like to add, like automatically removing regions for fields that have the name 'multiple items', adding a collection of fields without region, automatically assigning field properties, etc.

Any tips or sample code would be appreciated. Thanks!
