Language with lots of diacritics

What language(s) should I select to get the best results for an unlisted language that uses a lot of diacritics, including stacked diacritics?  I tried selecting Vietnamese, Maori, Latvian, French, and English but it didn't quite do it.  It is close though.

The main diacritic it has trouble with is the caron/hackek which occurs only on vowels (ǎ ě ǐ ǒ ǔ), and which can be stacked on the diacritic î ô û to get î̌ ô̌ û̌.

Any advice?

You may try to solve your scenario using the pattern training feature. In order to recognize characters with the diacritic symbols you can create a new recognition language and add these characters to the basic language alphabet. This possibility is available both in the desktop and in the SDK versions. The pattern training works as follows. One or two pages are recognized in the training mode, with the user entering the correct symbol values. These data are used to create a pattern. A pattern is a set of pairs “a character image — the character itself” created during pattern training. A pattern is used as a source of additional information during recognition. Then this pattern will be used for recognition of the remaining text.

If you use ABBYY FineReader (the desktop version), please read how you can do it in the Online Help: If your printed document contains non-standard fonts.

If you use ABBYY FineReader Engine (the version for developers), then please review the corresponding article in the Developer’s Help: Guided Tour → Advanced Techniques → Using GUI Elements → Recognizing with Training and Training User Patterns.

    Dear Oksana,

Thank you for your timely reply. I am using the desktop version.  I have read through the Online Help article you recommended, and this seems like it would potentially work. The only problem is that I cannot get past step 5 (under Using user patterns) / 7 (under Creating and training a user pattern), which says, "Click the button in the toolbar at the top of the Image pane."  I do not see this button appearing. Therefore I am not able to do any of the steps that follow it, because the options do not appear as described.

Could you help me figure out what I am doing wrong?  Do I need to have more than one image for it to read for this function to work? Or am I missing some other detail? After I create a new pattern, it just puts it in the list. If I click on Edit, it gives me a blank window (with grid lines if I click on Images) instead of the detailed dialogue shown in the Online Help article.

    Thanks for your help.

My colleagues, who are responsible for the Desktop products support (this Forum mostly works for the SDK products), will contact you by email in order to clarify some details.
