I am interested in the stand-alone FineReader PDF 15 for Windows because I read that it takes advantage of multiple cores simultaneously.
Is this true? My research has revealed that FineReader Engine and an OCR server application are both multithreaded, but I can't figure out whether FineReader PDF 15 is also multithreaded
Hi Jeremy, yes, FineReader PDF 15 is multithreaded. By default, it uses all but one of the available cores (one reserved for other tasks running on a computer), and number of cores used by FineReader PDF can be additionally adjusted in the program settings, if needed.

I can't advise you enough about getting FineReader, I migrated from Adobe to XChange and then FineReader. I also have used PhantomPDF in the past.
What I can say is that FineReader is the fastest when doing any processing operation, be it cropping, compressing, OCRing, rendering or saving the PDF. I'm not kidding, it's blazing fast. I just did OCR to a 108 PDF that on Acrobat takes roughly 3 minutes to process, Finereader did it in 28 seconds and, as I said, it is quite accurate, whereas Acrobat recognises roughly 30% of the words innacurately .(PhantomPDF also have very innacurate OCR)
It's also the most accurate OCR software out there, by a large margin.
XChange Editor now has an OCR plugin that is powered by FineReader. It is just as accurate, but much slower. XChange Editor is great, too, but everything is super slow, even slower than Acrobat.
