I couldn't locate the page you were referring to; I have looked all over the ABBYY and other pages, so far without finding the specific detail
What I need to know is whether it is using Named Pipes, HTTP, FTP etc as the system I am working on has many firewalls and routers that I have to declare in advance

We can not consult you because iFilter is not an ABBYY component. But you try to use Fiddler to catch details about network protocols.
That is quite a surprising response. iFilter is supplied as a part of ABBYY Recognition Server so I would expect that you would support it.
Unfortunately at present I do not have access to RS to be able to run Fiddler or check help documentation. I am an architect and the client has selected RS as the component of choice
