I would like to capture some data from hand-written forms - it is time series data that is filled out in a grid-like format. Are there any examples out there of capturing a specific area of an image defined by a geometric shape (like a grid on a paper form)?

The area of interest could be the rectangle only. You also can't detect the bounding rectangle on the image. RTR SDK tries to interpret all objects from the area of interest as text.
I should add that in the current version the RTR SDK doesn't support the recognition of the handwritten or handprinted text.
