What is the "Show out-of-processing batches" option in the Batch Filter window?

What does the Show out-of-processing batches option in the Batch Filter window mean?

Answer 

The Show out-of-processing batches option when enabled will show the batches which are not in the workflow, i.e. are not currently on any specific stage. For example, such batches could be created manually and were not sent to any stage for further processing.

    Why are batches staying in out of workflow-stage ?

    I just checked this for several of my abbyy projects and there is serieus list that's in there. How can we prevent this? What causes this ? Does that mean those batches were never processed. Im worried
